ExpiryEdge is our first pick for mobile vets, shelters and small practices that want simple SMS or WhatsApp booster reminders at a low price. You import your patient list by CSV, and each owner gets a text 30 days out, 7 days out and on the day. The same account can track the clinic's own licences.

It isn't connected to a practice management system (PIMS). If you want reminders driven automatically from your PIMS, by text, email, app push or postcard, pick PetDesk, which suits most US clinics on a supported system. AllyDVM is the pick if you want a published monthly price, and Otto suits clinics that want reminders inside one all-in-one communications platform. In the UK, look at PetsApp and Vetstoria. Weave suits clinics that mainly want phones and texting.

We make ExpiryEdge, which is one of the seven. What we say about the other six comes from their own websites, read on 7 November 2026, with a link beside each claim.

Quick verdict
Pick ExpiryEdge if you're a mobile vet, shelter or small practice that wants cheap SMS or WhatsApp booster reminders from a CSV list. Pick PetDesk if you want reminders driven straight from your PIMS. AllyDVM suits clinics that want a published monthly price, and PetsApp suits UK practices.

How we compared these tools

A reminder is only worth sending if the due date is right and the owner reads it. So our first column is whether a tool pulls due dates from your PIMS, which saves your front desk retyping every booster. Then come the channels each one uses, whether UK practices are served, and whether a price is on the website. On 7 November 2026 we read the vendors' product and pricing pages, and checked the legal dates against the CDC's rabies resources and GOV.UK's pet travel rules. We didn't send live reminders through paid trials of each tool, and ExpiryEdge is our product, so treat our placing of it with care.

Shortlist in a morning: start from your PIMS, then your clients' phones

Start with your PIMS. Every integrated tool below lists the systems it supports, so cross off any that don't list yours.

Then check channels against your clients. If your owners live on WhatsApp, PetsApp and ExpiryEdge support it. If older clients still respond to post, PetDesk sends postcards.

Pro tip
Ask each client at check-in which channel they actually read, and save it on their record. A WhatsApp-first owner who never opens email will book from the first message, and your front desk stops ringing people who already ignored two emails.

Look at what happens after the reminder, too. The tool that turns a text into a booked slot, through a link or two-way reply, earns its fee; one that only sends a notice leaves the work with your front desk.

Finally, compare the real monthly cost. AllyDVM, Otto, Weave and Vetstoria publish a figure or range; PetDesk and PetsApp quote. Run your current reminder list through a trial before you sign a contract.

Why a booster reminder is worth getting right

A vaccine reminder is the clinic's most routine message and one of its most valuable. Each pet has several due dates, the owner has to act, and a reminder that arrives late or by the wrong channel costs you the visit.

Some of those dates are set by law. Rabies vaccination rules for dogs, cats and ferrets are set state by state; the CDC's Public Health Law Program mapped them in a state rabies vaccination laws dataset. The CDC's own advice to owners is to keep pets up to date on rabies vaccines.

Travel adds deadlines. For a pet coming into Great Britain, it must be microchipped before its rabies vaccine and wait at least 21 days after the first vaccination before travel, per GOV.UK. An owner booking a summer trip in May needs a reminder well before then.

Boarding kennels and groomers add pressure too. Many ask for proof of vaccination before a stay, and the owner calls you the day before. A reminder that lands a month earlier saves that call.

So a reminder tool has to know each pet's due dates without double entry, reach the owner on the channel they read, repeat until they book, and show you who's overdue. The PIMS link matters most. Without it, someone retypes every vaccine.

Flow of a booster reminder: import pets and due dates by CSV, ExpiryEdge texts the owner 30 and 7 days out, the owner books through the link, and overdue pets get a notice and a 30-day follow-up
One booster, from due date to booked visit
A reminder schedule most clinics can run
  • First reminder 30 days before the vaccine is due
  • Second reminder 7 days before, with a booking link
  • An overdue notice on the due date
  • A follow-up 30 days after for lapsed patients
  • A separate message for pets with travel dates or boarding stays

1. ExpiryEdge: best for mobile vets and small practices without a PIMS integration

ExpiryEdge isn't a veterinary platform. It tracks anything with a date and reminds the person who has to act, and that person can be a pet owner. Each vaccine becomes a record with a due date, recurrence (one year or three) and the owner as an outside contact. You import your list by CSV with custom fields for species, breed and vaccine.

Owners get your schedule by SMS, WhatsApp or email: 30 days out, 7 days out and on the day. For boarding or travel, send a no-login request link so an owner can upload a certificate from another vet. Your team sees what's due in a calendar view and a daily digest.

Recurrence does the rolling forward. Once this year's booster is recorded, the record sets next year's due date and the same schedule starts again, so a solo mobile vet isn't rebuilding the list each spring. Delivery status shows whether each email actually reached the owner.

Try it with your own patient list in 15 minutes

  1. Export last month's vaccines from your PIMS or spreadsheet as a CSV and import it, with species, vaccine and owner phone as custom fields.
  2. Set a 30-day, 7-day and same-day schedule that texts or WhatsApps the owner, and set each record to recur after one year or three.
  3. Send one boarding client a no-login request link so they can upload a certificate from another vet.

Pricing: Personal covers 50 records for $29 a month, Pro 250 for $49, Business 750 for $99 and Power 2,500 for $199. Try any of them for 14 days without entering a card.

Watch out for: there's no PIMS sync, so new vaccines are entered or imported by hand. The record limits suit a mobile vet, a shelter or a small clinic, not a hospital with thousands of active patients.

Plan details are on the ExpiryEdge pricing page.

2. PetDesk: best for most US clinics on a supported PIMS

PetDesk sits on top of your PIMS. Its communications page says health service reminders go out by email, app push notification, SMS or postcard, and appointment reminders by text, email or push. Compliance reports show clients with upcoming or overdue services and remind them to book, and owners' channel preferences are respected.

The home page lists compatible PIMS including Cornerstone, Neo, AVImark, ImproMed, Covetrus Pulse, ezyVet, Provet, Vetspire, Shepherd, DaySmart Vet, Hippo and HVMS. Two-way texting, a pet owner app and online booking are part of the platform.

Pricing: not published. You'll need a demo.

Watch out for: confirmation sync depends on your PIMS, and PetDesk tells you to ask which systems support it during the demo.

3. AllyDVM: best if you want the price before the demo

AllyDVM, now "a Cencora business", offers automated reminders, lapsing and lapsed patient targeting, online booking and a pet owner app on every plan. It connects to your existing PIMS, and recent announcements cover write-back to Shepherd and compatibility with Instinct.

Pricing: published on the bundles and pricing page: Boost at $325 a month with one-way messaging, Amplify at $425 with two-way texting and telehealth, and Maximize at $525 with a loyalty programme. Plans are billed monthly and you can cancel any time.

Watch out for: the entry plan's texts are one-way, so clients can't reply to a reminder. Setup fees aren't listed.

4. Otto: best all-in-one communications platform

Otto bundles service and appointment reminders with unlimited two-way texting, payments, forms, online booking and an AI scribe. Communications go by text, email, phone and video. It lists integrations with AVImark, Cornerstone, Neo, ezyVet, ImproMed, Instinct, Shepherd, Vetspire and Covetrus Pulse.

Otto's plans page as of 7 November 2026

Pricing: the plans page says pricing ranges from $350 to $1,000+ a month, with automatic service reminders, lapsed client reminders and follow-ups included.

Watch out for: the page doesn't say what moves a clinic from $350 to $1,000, so you'll need a quote.

5. Weave: best if missed calls hurt more than missed boosters

Weave for veterinary combines a phone system with texting. Appointment reminders are automated and customised by appointment type and send time, missed calls get a text reply, and online bookings write back to your PIMS.

Pricing: the pricing page starts from $199 a month, with Pro, Elite and Ultimate tiers. Bulk texts run from 1,500 to 15,000 a month by tier.

Watch out for: the veterinary page talks about appointment reminders, not vaccine due-date reminders. Ask whether service reminders come from your PIMS.

6. PetsApp: best for UK practices that want WhatsApp

PetsApp gives each clinic an owner app, and client chat, SMS and WhatsApp land in one shared inbox. Automated reminders bring owners back for vaccinations and check-ups, and it works alongside your existing PMS.

PetsApp's UK home page as of 7 November 2026

Pricing: the pricing page quotes after a 30-minute demo. Reminders are a feature you switch on, not part of the standard bundle.

Watch out for: check which PMS it integrates with before the demo, because the home page doesn't name them.

7. Vetstoria: best for UK online booking

Vetstoria is mainly an online booking tool that writes to your PMS in real time and sends email confirmations and reminders. Its pricing page lists UK prices of £199, £299 and £399 a month per location by team size, with no contract, and points US practices to PetDesk.

Pricing: £199 to £399 a month per location, excluding tax.

Watch out for: the pricing page doesn't list vaccine reminders, so pair it with your PMS's own reminders or another tool.

ExpiryEdge as an alternative to PetDesk

We put ExpiryEdge first because it's the simplest way to get booster reminders out when you don't have a PIMS integration, and you can see the price up front. PetDesk is still the right call for a PIMS-connected clinic sending thousands of reminders a month. Keep it if that's you. ExpiryEdge makes sense when there's no PIMS integration to lean on: a mobile vet working from a phone, a rescue tracking adopters' boosters, or a small practice that wants WhatsApp reminders at $49 a month.

A mobile vet with 400 patients and one vaccine record each fits on the Business plan. ExpiryEdge can also cover the clinic's own dates in the same account, such as the DEA registration and the x-ray test. That's useful for a small team with one person doing everything.

Don't switch if you need reminders driven automatically from your PIMS, postcards, or an owner app. ExpiryEdge does none of those.

For the clinic's own deadlines, see our veterinary compliance software comparison and the veterinary compliance hub. Our automated reminders page shows how schedules work, and small business covers setup for a small team.

Frequently asked questions

ExpiryEdge is the best pick for mobile vets and small practices that want text or WhatsApp reminders without a PIMS link. If you want reminders driven from your PIMS, pick PetDesk. It reads due dates from 12 listed PIMS and sends reminders by text, email, push or postcard. AllyDVM publishes its prices, and PetsApp suits UK practices.

Published prices run from $199 a month for Weave and $325 to $525 for AllyDVM to $350 to $1,000+ for Otto. Vetstoria lists £199 to £399 a month per UK location. PetDesk and PetsApp quote after a demo. ExpiryEdge's plans are listed on its pricing page from $29 a month, without a PIMS link.

Yes. PetsApp's UK site says WhatsApp and SMS messages land in one shared inbox, and it sends booster reminders. ExpiryEdge can text or WhatsApp an owner you've added as a contact. The US platforms we checked mostly rely on text and email instead.

A common schedule is 30 days before the due date, again at 7 days with a booking link, and on the day itself. Add a follow-up about 30 days after for lapsed patients, and earlier reminders for pets with travel plans that need a rabies vaccine.

Not always. Many clinics add PetDesk, AllyDVM or Otto for two-way texting, app push and compliance reports that show overdue pets. If your PIMS reminders already get clients booking, ask what a second tool adds before you pay for it.

GOV.UK says the pet must be microchipped before its rabies vaccination and must wait at least 21 full days after the first vaccination before travelling to Great Britain. The exact wait depends on the vaccine type, so owners should check with their vet early.

None of the tools compared here is free. ExpiryEdge has a 14-day free trial with no credit card, and AllyDVM bills monthly so you can cancel any time. Before you buy, check what reminders your PIMS sends today.
