LPC license renewal rules are set by each state counseling board. In eight large states we checked, licenses renew every two years except New York, which registers counselors every three. Continuing education (CE) runs from 24 hours in Texas to 40 in North Carolina, usually with 3 to 6 ethics hours. Deadlines follow birth months, fixed dates or license expiry.

You manage a group practice with counselors licensed in several states, and every board counts hours and dates differently. Below is one table of cycles, CE hours, ethics hours and deadlines, each row checked against the official board or rule, plus a tracking sheet that flags a CE gap before the deadline.

Key takeaways

  • Seven of the eight states renew every 2 years. New York registers licensed mental health counselors every 3 years.
  • CE hours per cycle: Texas 24, Florida 30, Pennsylvania 30, Illinois 30, Ohio 30, California 36, New York 36 (per 3 years), North Carolina 40.
  • Ethics is required almost everywhere: 6 hours in Texas and California, 3 in Florida (ethics and boundaries or telehealth), Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio and North Carolina. New York's law sets no separate ethics minimum.
  • Fixed-date states renew together: Florida and Illinois on 31 March of odd years, Pennsylvania on 28 February of odd years, North Carolina on 30 June.
  • First renewals differ. Florida, Illinois and New York require no CE for the first renewal or registration period; California requires the full 36 hours.
  • Compact privileges expire with the home license and must be renewed separately after the home state renews.

What are the LPC license renewal requirements by state?

Each state sets its own cycle, hours and deadline, and some use a different title for the same role. This table covers the counselor license with independent practice in each state. Every row was checked against the board's own page and the governing rule or statute on 12 October 2026.

What extra courses do states add to LPC renewal?

Most states add named courses on top of the general hours. These usually count toward the total, but they are the items auditors check first.

Do you need CE for your first LPC license renewal?

It depends on the state. Florida says practitioners renewing for the first time are exempt from CE. Illinois says CE is not required for the first renewal. New York exempts the first three-year registration period, then pro-rates the next one at one hour per month. California is the exception: first-time renewals need the full 36 hours. North Carolina requires 30 hours instead of 40 when the first period is under two full years. For the other states, ask the board rather than assume.

When is your LPC license renewal deadline?

Your deadline is one of three types, and each needs a different reminder.

  • Birth month (Texas, and New York after the first period). Texas renewals are due on the last day of the license holder's birth month and can be completed up to 60 days in advance. New York adjusts registration periods so later renewals fall in the birth month.
  • Fixed statewide date (Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, North Carolina). Everyone renews together, so board systems and CE providers get busy in the final weeks. North Carolina asks licensees to submit before 20 June where possible.
  • Anniversary of issue (California, Ohio). The date is printed on the license. In Ohio a license expires two years from the date it was issued or renewed.
LPC license renewal deadline types: birth-month deadlines in Texas and New York, fixed statewide dates in Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania and North Carolina, and license-anniversary dates in California and OhioThree kinds of LPC renewal deadline. Fixed-date states renew everyone at once, so start CE early.

⚠️What happens if you miss it: in Texas, a license not renewed by the expiration date incurs late fees, and a delinquent license not renewed within 1 year expires. In Florida, an unrenewed license goes delinquent and becomes null and void if it is not renewed before the end of the following licensure cycle. California allows renewal of an expired LPCC license within three years, after which a new license is needed. Illinois counselors who miss the online window must apply for reinstatement.

How does the Counseling Compact affect LPC license renewal?

The Counseling Compact lets a counselor licensed and living in a member state apply for a privilege to practice in other member states. As of 1 October 2026 it is live in 10 states, including Ohio, with 29 more states and DC preparing. For tracking, one rule matters: the privilege expires on the same date as your home state license when it is issued, and it does not update automatically when you renew at home. You renew the privilege in CompactConnect after your home state reports the new expiry date.

So a counselor with a home license and two privileges has three dates to track, and the privileges always follow the home renewal. Put them on the same row or record and set the privilege reminder for just after the home deadline.

How should a group practice track LPC renewals?

Give each counselor one row per state license or privilege, record CE as it is earned, and let a formula show the gap. Here is the process we suggest:

  1. List every license and privilege. Name, state, title (LPC, LPCC, LMHC, LCMHC), number, expiry, supervision status.
  2. Add the state's rule to each row: cycle, CE hours and ethics hours from the table above.
  3. Log CE as it happens. Course, hours, ethics hours, completion date and certificate link.
  4. Check the gap monthly. Anyone more than half way through a cycle with less than half the hours gets a nudge.
  5. At 90 days, confirm the extras: jurisprudence exam, named courses, background checks.
  6. After renewal, record the new expiry, then renew any compact privilege and update CAQH.

Two more dates sit beside the license for counselors who bill insurance. DataSpring (formerly CAQH) runs clinician profiles on a 120-day attestation cycle. And since Medicare Part B now covers mental health counselor services, enrolled counselors must revalidate their Medicare enrollment every 5 years.

Do this now: an LPC renewal tracker with a CE gap formula

Set this up in about 30 minutes for a practice of up to 20 counselors (our estimate). One row per counselor per state.

Copy-paste LPC license renewal tracker layout (row 2 formulas)
ColumnHeaderWhat goes in it
ACounselorName

CExpiryFrom the board's license lookup
DCycle (months)24, or 36 for New York
ECE requiredFrom the table, e.g. 24
FEthics requiredFrom the table, e.g. 6
GCE done=SUMIFS(CE!C:C,CE!A:A,A2,CE!B:B,B2)
HEthics done=SUMIFS(CE!D:D,CE!A:A,A2,CE!B:B,B2)
IDays left=C2-TODAY()
JCE gap=MAX(0,E2-G2)+MAX(0,F2-H2)
KStatus=IF(I2<0,"Expired",IF(AND(J2>0,I2<=90),"CE short",IF(I2<=60,"Renew now","OK")))

The CE sheet has one row per course: A counselor, B state and title, C hours, D ethics hours, E completion date, F certificate link. Counting only courses completed inside the current cycle needs one more condition in each SUMIFS, for example CE!E:E,">="&EDATE(C2,-D2). Column J adds any shortfall in total hours to any shortfall in ethics hours.

Worked example (illustrative). A Texas LPC's license expires on 30 April 2027. Her cycle needs 24 hours including 6 ethics. She has logged 18 hours, 3 of them ethics. Column J shows 6 + 3 = 9, and on 30 January 2027 (90 days out) column K turns to "CE short". She needs 9 more hours, at least 3 of them ethics (any ethics hours also count toward the 24), plus the jurisprudence exam.

💡 Pro Tip

Group practices we work with keep each counselor's license, CE certificates and CAQH attestation on one provider record, with the clinical director as owner and the counselor as backup. Certificates are collected through a document request as courses are finished, so the audit file is complete before renewal rather than rebuilt after a board audit letter.

How can you make renewals easier beyond the minimum?

  • Book CE in the first year of the cycle. Fixed-date states fill up late.
  • Align ethics with practice risk. Texas and California let you choose topics; use them for telehealth, records and supervision issues your team actually meets.
  • Keep certificates for the audit period. California asks licensees to keep CE records for at least two years; North Carolina asks for seven.
  • Stagger supervisors. Ohio and Texas supervisors need supervision hours each cycle; track them separately.

Spreadsheet or software for LPC license renewal tracking?

A spreadsheet is enough for a small practice in one state, especially a fixed-date state where everyone renews together. It gets harder with counselors in several states, birth-month deadlines spread across the year, compact privileges that must follow each home renewal, and CE certificates arriving by email.

Software earns its place when you need reminders that reach the counselor and the director without anyone opening a file, certificates collected on the record, and one view across states. ExpiryEdge does this with a record per license or privilege, reminders at 90, 60, 30 and 7 days, document requests for CE certificates and an audit trail. For the wider picture, see healthcare credentialing software, the provider credentialing checklist, malpractice insurance tracking and, for nursing aides, CNA license renewal requirements.

Frequently asked questions

How often do you renew an LPC license?

In California, Florida, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas, every two years. New York registers licensed mental health counselors every three years. Check your own board, because the first period after licensure is often shorter.

How many CE hours do LPCs need?

Per renewal cycle: Texas 24, Florida, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania 30, California 36, North Carolina 40, and New York 36 over three years. Several states also require named courses, such as Pennsylvania's 2 hours of child abuse recognition and reporting.

How many ethics hours are required for LPC license renewal?

Texas and California require 6 hours (law and ethics in California). Florida requires 3 hours of ethics and boundaries or telehealth, alternating each renewal. Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Carolina require 3. New York's law sets no separate ethics minimum.

When is the Texas LPC renewal deadline?

Texas renewals are due on the last day of the license holder's birth month every two years and can be completed up to 60 days in advance. You must also pass the jurisprudence exam each renewal period and complete an approved human trafficking prevention course.

Do I need CE for my first LPC renewal?

Not in Florida or Illinois, and not during New York's first registration period. California requires the full 36 hours at the first renewal, and North Carolina requires 30 hours when the first period is under two years.

Does a Counseling Compact privilege renew automatically?

No. A privilege expires on the same date as your home state license when it is issued, and it does not update when you renew at home. After your home state reports the new expiry, you renew the privilege in CompactConnect.
