How long is an NPORS card valid?
2 years (red) or 5 years (blue)
An NPORS CSCS-branded Trained Operator (red) card is valid for two years and can be extended once by 12 months if you are registered for an NVQ. The Competent Operator (blue) card, issued once the qualification is achieved, is valid for five years.
Work out your NPORS card expiry date
Runs in your browser. Nothing is sent or stored.
NPORS dates the card from the date of application (new entrants: from the test date).
NPORS sets the period by card type. Pick 2 years for a red Trained Operator card or 5 years for a blue Competent Operator card, or track the expiry date printed on the card.
Enter a date to see when it expires, how many days are left, when to book the renewal, and to add reminders to your calendar.
Who needs a NPORS card
Plant and equipment operators (for example telehandlers, excavators, dumpers and forklifts) on sites that accept or require NPORS cards as evidence of training and competence. The red card is for trained operators working towards an NVQ; the blue card shows the qualification has been achieved.
What happens if it expires
- If the qualification is not achieved by the end of the extension, NPORS says you will not be allowed to apply for another CSCS-branded Trained Operator card.
- Sites that check cards can refuse to let an operator use plant until a valid card is shown.
How to renew
Check card colour and expiry
Red cards are dated for two years, blue cards for five.
Red card: register for the NVQ early
You need to be registered with an NVQ awarding body before you can ask for the 12-month extension.
Keep the HS&E test current
NPORS asks for an NPORS or CITB health, safety and environment test passed within two years of applying.
Apply through NPORS or your training provider
Apply for the extension or the blue card before the red card runs out.
When to book

weeks
Start the NVQ well before a red card’s two years are up. Four months ahead is our suggestion, not an NPORS rule.
A simple reminder plan: 180 days, 90 days, 30 days, 7 days before the expiry date. The calculator above puts these in your calendar.
Evidence to keep
- Card number, colour, categories and expiry date for every operator.
- NVQ registration evidence for red card holders.
- The operator’s HS&E test date.
Common mistakes
- Treating the red card as a five-year card.
- Leaving the NVQ too late, so the one-off extension runs out before the qualification is achieved.
