How long is a CPCS card valid, and how do you renew it?
5 years (blue card)
A blue CPCS Competent Operator card is issued for five years. You can apply to renew from three months before expiry, with the CPCS CPD renewal, an HS&E test passed within two years and evidence of operating experience. Red Trained Operator cards are extended, not renewed.

Who needs a CPCS card
Plant operators on sites that require CPCS, often major contractors and infrastructure clients. The card is issued per plant category, so check the categories match the machine.
What happens if it expires
- An expired blue card can still be renewed within 5 years of expiry, but sites will not accept it in the meantime; after 5 years you start again.
- Sites that require CPCS can stop the operator using plant until a valid card is shown.

Show operating experience
A logbook, an on-site assessment, a CPCS practical test or a VQ from the last two years.

CPCS accepts renewal applications from three months before the expiry date.

Start as soon as the three-month window opens. That is the earliest CPCS accepts an application.
A simple reminder plan: 120 days, 90 days, 30 days, 7 days before the expiry date. The calculator above puts these in your calendar.

Common mistakes
- Missing the renewal window and being off site while an expired card is renewed.
