Do OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 cards expire?
No federal expiry
OSHA 10-hour and 30-hour course completion cards do not expire under the federal program, which is voluntary. Some states, cities and employers set their own rules. Nevada cards for entertainment and convention work expire after 5 years, and New York City site safety cards last 5 years.

Who needs an OSHA 10 / 30 card
Nobody under federal OSHA rules: the Outreach Training Program is voluntary and does not replace the training employers must provide under specific OSHA standards. But some states, municipalities, employers and unions require the card as a condition of work, especially in construction. Nevada, for example, requires OSHA 10 for construction workers and OSHA 30 for supervisors within 15 days of hire, and New York City requires site safety training that includes OSHA hours.
What happens if you miss a re-check
- Under the federal program nothing expires. A card from any year still shows you completed the course.
- In Nevada’s entertainment and convention-services sectors, cards expire 5 years after issue. An employer must suspend or terminate a worker who does not present a current, valid card, and faces fines of up to $500 for a first violation and $1,000 for a second.
- In New York City, Site Safety Training (SST) cards are valid for 5 years. Workers can renew up to 1 year after expiry, but cannot use the card on site until it is renewed.
- Replacement cards are only available if the class was within the last 5 years, because trainers keep records for 5 years. After that you have to retake the course.

Check the rule where you work
Ask the site, employer or state agency whether a renewal cycle applies. OSHA says any decision on what training is accepted belongs to the organization requiring it.
Keep the card safe
OSHA does not keep records of Outreach classes. Only the authorized trainer or online provider can replace a card, and only within 5 years.
Use an authorized trainer
Ask to see the trainer’s current Authorized Trainer card, which shows the authorization expiration date and the authorizing training organization.
Renew where required
In Nevada’s covered sectors you can renew by retaking the course or by showing approved continuing education within the previous 5 years. In NYC, renew the SST card through a DOB-registered course provider.

Where a renewal cycle applies, book the course about a month before the card expires. This is our suggestion, not a state rule.

- A copy of each worker’s card (front and back) and the class end date.
- The trainer or online provider’s name, so a replacement can be requested within 5 years.
- Any state, city or client rule that sets a renewal cycle for your sites.
Common mistakes
- Treating an OSHA 10 card as meeting the training required by specific OSHA standards. OSHA says it does not.
- Assuming a card that does not expire federally is accepted everywhere. Check state, city and site rules.
- Waiting more than 5 years to ask for a replacement card.
- Buying a course from someone who is not an authorized trainer.
Other jurisdictions
Nevada
OSHA 10 (workers) and OSHA 30 (supervisors) are required within 15 days of hire in construction. In the entertainment and convention-services sectors the card expires 5 years after issue and must be renewed.[3]
New York City
Construction and demolition workers on sites with a Construction Superintendent, Site Safety Coordinator or Site Safety Manager need 40 hours of Site Safety Training, which can include OSHA 10 or 30. SST cards are valid for 5 years.[4]
