Continuation every 5 years

A goods vehicle operator licence does not have a simple expiry date, but you must pay a continuation fee every five years to keep it active. GOV.UK lists the continuation fee as £401.

Who needs an operator licence

Businesses that use goods vehicles above the weight thresholds to carry goods for hire or reward or in connection with their trade, as set out on GOV.UK. The licence is held by the operator, and a transport manager is responsible for continuous and effective management where required.

What happens if it expires

  • GOV.UK says the continuation fee is what keeps the licence active, so a missed continuation puts the licence at risk. Check the consequences with the Office of the Traffic Commissioner.
  • Operating without a valid licence is a serious offence and can lead to vehicles being impounded.

How to renew

  1. Know your continuation date

It falls five years after issue or after the last continuation.

  2. Check the licence details

Vehicle numbers, operating centres and transport manager details should be current before you continue.

  3. Pay the continuation fee

Pay through the vehicle operator licensing service when the continuation is due.

When to book

weeks

Start two months ahead so changes to the licence can be sorted out first. This is our suggestion.

A simple reminder plan: 90 days, 60 days, 30 days, 7 days before the expiry date. The calculator above puts these in your calendar.

Evidence to keep

  • Licence number and continuation date.
  • Payment confirmation for each continuation.
  • Records of changes to operating centres and transport managers.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the licence never needs any action.
  • Letting the transport manager details go out of date before continuation.
