Who needs an ISO 9001 certificate

Organisations certified to ISO 9001 by an accredited certification body, often because customers or tenders require it. The same cycle applies to ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and other management system certificates issued under ISO/IEC 17021-1.

What happens if it expires

  • If recertification is not completed before expiry, validity is not extended and customers who check the certificate will see it lapsed.
  • The certification body can restore certification within 6 months of expiry if the outstanding activities are completed; otherwise at least a stage 2 audit is needed. The new expiry date stays tied to the previous cycle.
  • If a surveillance audit cannot be held in time, the certificate can be suspended.

How to renew

  1. Plan the audit programme for three years

Two surveillance audits and a recertification audit, with dates agreed with the certification body.

  2. Keep internal audits and management review on time

The certification body will look for them at every visit.

  3. Close nonconformities fast

Major nonconformities must be corrected and verified before the certification decision.

  4. Book recertification well before expiry

Leave time for the audit, any corrective actions and the decision.

When to book

17

weeks

Book the recertification audit four months before expiry so corrective actions and the decision fit before the date. This is our suggestion.

A simple reminder plan: 180 days, 120 days, 60 days, 30 days before the expiry date. The calculator above puts these in your calendar.

Evidence to keep

  • The certificate and its expiry date.
  • Audit reports and closed nonconformities from each visit.
  • Internal audit and management review records.

Common mistakes

  • Booking recertification so late that the decision falls after expiry.
  • Missing the first surveillance audit window after initial certification.
  • Not updating customers’ supplier portals with the new certificate.

ISO 9001 certificate questions, answered

An accredited certificate runs for a three-year cycle, as long as the yearly surveillance audits are passed.

At least once per calendar year outside the recertification year. The first must take place no later than 12 months after the certification decision.

Validity is not extended. The certification body can restore it within 6 months if the outstanding recertification activities are completed, with the expiry date based on the previous cycle; after that at least a stage 2 audit is needed.
