How long is ServSafe Manager certification valid?

The National Restaurant Association recognizes the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification for five years. ServSafe Food Handler, Alcohol and Allergens certificates are recognized for three years. State, local and employer requirements can differ, so check with your health department.

Who needs a ServSafe Manager
Restaurants and other food establishments in jurisdictions that require a Certified Food Protection Manager. The FDA Food Code, a model that states and local governments can adopt, says the person in charge shall be a certified food protection manager who has passed a test that is part of an accredited program, with an exception for establishments the regulatory authority deems minimal risk. Whether and how it applies to you depends on your state and local code.
What happens if it expires
- Once the certification is no longer recognized, you may not meet a state or local requirement for a certified food protection manager.
- ServSafe cannot reissue certificates that are more than five years old.
- Recertification means passing an accredited exam again. There is no automatic renewal.

Check your local rule first
Ask your state or local health department how long it recognizes manager certification and whether it has extra requirements.
Decide whether to retake the course
Take the course if you want a refresher. Either way, you must pass the proctored exam.
Book a proctored exam
Take it online with a proctor or at a test center. ServSafe says remote exams given by a Registered Proctor through web applications are not valid.
File the new certificate
Download the certificate, post it if your jurisdiction requires, and record the new date.
When to book

Start about 2 months before the 5-year mark to leave time for study, exam booking and a possible retake. This is our suggestion, not a ServSafe rule.

Common mistakes
- Mixing up the 5-year Manager certification with 3-year Food Handler certificates.
- Assuming five years applies everywhere. Some jurisdictions set their own period.
- Taking an unproctored or improperly proctored exam, which is not valid.
- Waiting more than five years, after which a lost certificate cannot be reissued.
