How often do you renew an RN license?

Usually every 2 years

Each state board of nursing sets its own RN license renewal cycle. California, Texas and Florida generally use two-year cycles, while New York registration renews every three years. New York and Texas say you cannot practice as a nurse while your license or registration is expired.

Runs in your browser. Nothing is sent or stored.

Easier still: look up the expiration date on Nursys or your state board and work back from it.

Each state board of nursing sets the cycle. California, Texas and Florida use two years; New York uses three. First licenses can run shorter or longer, so use the expiration date the board shows.

Enter a date to see when it expires, how many days are left, when to book the renewal, and to add reminders to your calendar.

Texas
Usually 2 years; 20 CE contact hours per renewal[7]
New York
Registration renews every 3 years[9]

Texas: cannot work as a nurse with a delinquent license[7]

Who needs a RN license

Every registered nurse who practices in the US needs a current license from a state board of nursing. Hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and staffing agencies need to check that every nurse they employ or place holds a current license, and track each expiration date. Nurses on a Nurse Licensure Compact multistate license hold one license, issued by their primary state of residence. Each nurse is responsible for their own nursing license renewal; employers that verify licenses track the same dates.

What happens if it expires

  • In Texas, a license not renewed before it expires goes into delinquent status, and you cannot practice or work as a nurse until it is renewed.
  • In New York, you are not legally allowed to practice as an RN while your registration is expired.
  • In Florida, late renewal adds a delinquency fee. A license left delinquent becomes null and void two years after expiration and cannot be reactivated, so the nurse must apply for licensure again.
  • In California, a lapsed license needs a delinquent renewal fee and proof of 30 contact hours. After eight years lapsed, the nurse must also show competency.
  • For employers, a lapsed license can take a nurse off the schedule at short notice. Check your state board’s rules on practicing with a lapsed license.

How to renew

  1. Find the expiration date

Look up each nurse on Nursys QuickConfirm or the state board’s license lookup. QuickConfirm is free and shows where a nurse holds the authority to practice.

  2. Check the state’s continuing education rules

Hours and required topics differ. California asks for 30 contact hours, Texas 20, and Florida 24 plus set courses. New York requires infection control coursework every four years.

  3. Complete your RN license renewal with the state board before the deadline

Renew online with the board that issued the license. California will not accept a renewal more than three months before expiration, and nurses must renew even without a renewal notice.

  4. Verify the new date and file the evidence

Once the board shows the new expiration date, save a verification from the board or Nursys to the nurse’s file and update your tracker.

When to book

9

weeks

Start your nursing license renewal about 2 months before expiration so CE hours can be finished and the board can process the renewal. This is our suggestion. Some boards, like California, open renewal no earlier than 3 months before.

A simple reminder plan: 90 days, 60 days, 30 days, 7 days before the expiration date. The calculator above puts these in your calendar.

Evidence to keep

  • A dated license verification for each nurse from the state board or Nursys, showing license type, status and expiration date.
  • The nurse’s license number, issuing state and whether the license is single-state or multistate.
  • Proof of renewal, plus any CE certificates the board may ask for in an audit.
  • Your Nursys e-Notify enrollment, so expiration and status updates reach the right manager.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every state renews every two years. New York registration runs three years.
  • Relying on a photocopy of the license instead of checking the board or Nursys.
  • Missing a state’s required CE topics, such as Florida’s human trafficking and laws and rules courses.
  • Losing track of first-license periods, which can be shorter or longer than the usual cycle.
  • Checking an old state’s license after a nurse moves. A multistate license is issued by the primary state of residence.

Other jurisdictions

California

Renews every two years, with 30 contact hours of continuing education for an active license. The first license is issued for two birthdays, not two years.[6]

Texas

Licenses are typically valid for 2 years. Each renewal needs 20 contact hours of continuing nursing education or a board-approved national certification.[7]

Florida

Renews every two years, in three groups with different expiration dates. Renewal needs 24 CE hours, including set courses on medical errors and Florida laws and rules.[8]

New York

Registration renews every 3 years. Practicing RNs must complete approved infection control coursework every four years.[9]

For teams and managers

Managing licenses for a nursing team?

Add each nurse's license, state and expiration date once. ExpiryEdge reminds the nurse and the director of nursing 90, 60 and 30 days out, collects the renewed license, and keeps a verification record for every audit.

FAQ

RN license questions, answered

Nursing license renewal depends on the state. California, Texas and Florida renew RN licenses every two years. New York registration renews every three years. A first license can run for a different length.

Generally no. Texas says you cannot practice or work as a nurse with a delinquent license, and New York says you are not legally allowed to practice while your registration is expired. Check your own state board’s rules.

A multistate license is issued by your primary state of residence, so you renew it with that state’s board. Once you have a multistate license, NCSBN says you can stop renewing licenses held in other compact states.

Nursys e-Notify for institutions is free. It sends license status changes, expiration updates and public discipline information from the boards of nursing, and lets you set expiration reminders.

NCSBN describes Nursys e-Notify data as a primary source equivalent, provided directly from the boards of nursing.
