How to create, rename, or delete an expiry type
Expiry Types are the categories you use to classify expiries (e.g. "License", "Contract", "Certificate").
What is it
An Expiry Type is a simple category label - just a name (like "Insurance", "Software License", "Employee Certification") - used to group and filter expiries. It has no fields of its own beyond its name; it's purely for organization and reporting.
Why / when to use it
Steps- Use types when you mainly need to sort and count things - "how many licenses do we have?", "show me all contracts" - and don't need extra structured data beyond the standard expiry fields.
- If you find yourself wanting the same set of extra fields every time you create a certain kind of expiry (e.g. every vendor contract needs a "Contract Value" and "Renewal Notice Period"), that's a sign you want a Template, not just a Type - see the Templates article for the difference.
- Types and Templates aren't mutually exclusive - a Template can (and often should) also be assigned a matching Type, so you get both structured custom fields and simple category filtering.
- From the sidebar, go to Expiry Types.
- Click New Type, enter a unique Type Name, and click Create.
- To rename a type, open its row menu (three dots) and choose Rename, edit the name, and Save.
- To delete a type that still has expiries in it, open its row menu and choose Delete - you'll be asked to either move those expiries to another type, rename the type instead, or delete the type and all its expiries.
- If your plan has a category limit, you'll see a usage chip (e.g. "5 / 10 used") at the top of the page.
